Children design the future: Neuwied listens to their ideas!

In Neuwied, children and young people actively bring their suggestions and ideas for urban design. Mayor Peter Jung has expanded the series of events "Ask the Mayor" to a total of six appointments in order to offer the young citizens a forum. These meetings took place in different places such as schools and playgrounds and treated central topics such as traffic safety as well as leisure and educational offers.

A recurring concern of the young participants was traffic safety, in particular the lack of zebra crossing after renovation work. In addition, the children expressed the desire for more parks, a comic shop in the city center and better equipped playgrounds. Schools and daycare centers were discussed as central habitats that need more attention. Furthermore, the children show a high degree of responsibility, which is reflected in suggestions such as garbage collection campaigns and support for homeless people.

action plan for child -friendly municipality

Mayor Jung emphasizes that implementation of small measures is important and greater concerns are discussed in discussions with the children. Feedback on implemented and non -implementable proposals are considered essential. Many of the suggestions flow into the action plan of the child -friendly municipality, which will be implemented by 2026. The city of Neuwied invites schools, clubs and daycare centers to participate in the program and to bring their concerns to promote the opportunities for participation of young citizens.

Based on the importance of participation for children and adolescents, another case from Regensburg shows that defects in local public transport (public transport) and the infrastructure in municipal participation procedures of young people were also shown. Among other things, the Regensburg youth called for the introduction of old town -based buses, a night bus operation at the weekend for security reasons and the opening of pedestrian zones for bicycles to improve mobility. The city of Regensburg reacted to this and permanently implemented all three demands, of which citizens of all ages benefit, as on Children-Freundliche-kommunen.de
