Neuwied is investing 4.5 million euros in flood protection museum!

Neuwied receives significant financial support for the renovation of his dike crown. A funding package of 4.5 million euros was guaranteed, as Federal Minister of Building Clara Geywitz announced in December. This initiative is intended to help fix the current desolate state of the dike crown and at the same time to improve the safety standards against floods. The project must be billed by 2028, which means that the city is under pressure to take all the necessary steps to comply with the deadlines.

Real estate management has already started planning. The aim is to create a universally usable exhibition area. City marketing also works on a museum concept that is integrated into this project. The current state of the intended building is terrifying because it is in the raw material. In order to comply with the technical requirements, the planning is advertised, whereby the statics and specialist planning must be available by the end of the year to submit a building application.

concrete developments and redesign

It is planned to create an entrance area including a bistro on the ground floor, which is accessible independently of the museum. The museum rooms are to be accommodated on the upper floors, which offer a total area of approx. 620 square meters. In order to implement the construction according to the original plans, pavilions are added to the sides of the main building that correspond to the historical condition.

A dilapidated balcony has already been demolished, so that pedestrians can now pass the building again from Rheinstraße. A central element of the project will be a climate protection museum that deals with weather and environmental disasters, especially in relation to flood protection measures.

The city administration relies on its expertise in flood protection to develop the museum concept and would like to create synergies with the new dyke information center. This center will be closely connected to the future museum. In order to make the concept attractive, city marketing will also search for further funding opportunities for the museum part of the project.

accompanying measures and future steps

An ideas competition will take place after the completion of the list of services, which should ensure that creative approaches flow into the concept. This diversity should particularly appeal to cultural and landscape lovers as well as families and tour operators. Digitization will be a central concern of the project.
