Westerwaldkreis leads: There are so many electric loading points now!

The trend towards electromobility continues to increase in Germany, and the number of public charging points for electric cars is growing continuously. A current analysis shows that the two federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland have significant differences in the spread of charging infrastructure.

in the Westerwaldkreis, a region in Rhineland-Palatinate, are in operation in an incredible 390 charging points on the date of January 1, 2025. The Westerwaldkreis thus takes first place within Rhineland-Palatinate. Immediately behind Mainz follows with 384 charging points, while the district of Mayen-Koblenz took third place with 336 charging points. These developments are a remarkable increase in comparison to the previous year: The Westerwaldkreis increased its number from 296 to 390, Mayen-Koblenz from 273 to 336 and Mainz from 301 to 384. This clearly shows that demand for electromobility is also growing in these regions, which is evidenced by the increasing number of public charging stations, such as stern.de reported.

If you look at the total number of loading points in Rhineland-Palatinate, there was a total of 6,335 public charging points on February 1, 2025, which corresponds to an increase of 21 percent compared to the previous year. Of these, more than 2,000 fast loaders with an output of at least 22 kilowatts are. However, a look at the federal state comparison shows that Rhineland-Palatinate ranks in midfield, while most charging points in Baden-Württemberg (27,778), North Rhine-Westphalia (31.077) and Bavaria (31,463) can be found. In contrast, the Saarland is located with 1,233 charging points at the lower end of the scale and thus occupies last place among the German federal states.

charging infrastructure in Saarland

The Saarland has also made progress, especially in the Saarbrücken regional association, where there were a total of 399 charging points at the beginning of 2025. This increase of 79 loading points compared to the previous year shows that electromobility also gains driving. 228 and 227 charging points were registered in the Saarpfalzkreis and in the district of Saarlouis. The district of Neunkirchen, on the other hand, recorded very few in Saarland with 109 charging points. Overall, the number of public charging points in Saarland rose by 16 percent compared to the previous year, such as n-tv.de reported.

Although progress is recognizable, the Saarland remains behind the other federal states in a nationwide comparison. It is not a secret that the charging infrastructure plays an important role in promoting electromobility. The expansion of this infrastructure is crucial to promote the switch to electric cars and increase acceptance among consumers.

In summary, it can be seen that both Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland make progress in the charging infrastructure, but with considerable differences in the number of charging points available. There is still a need for investments and strategic expansion to ensure a comprehensive charging infrastructure.
