Bahn chaos in the Lahn-Kinzig-Kreis: Citizens are demanding faster solutions!

On March 8, 2025, the municipal working group of local transport (AGNV) called for urgent improvements on the Lahn-Kinzig-Bahn between Gelnhausen and Gießen. In a resolution signed to the Hessische Landesbahn (HLB) and DB Infrago AG, AGNV addresses the unbearable situation for commuters and students. Cäcilia Reichert-Dietzel, Mayor of Ranstadt and spokeswoman for AGNV, emphasized the decisive importance of this rail connection for the population and demanded the fastest possible solutions.

Currently there are massive problems in train operation: since July 2024 there are no trains between Büdingen and Gelnhausen, and train traffic between Nidda and Gießen was also discontinued in the afternoon. An acute lack of staff at signal boxes leads to repeated failures, especially in the morning, evening and at night. In addition, rail replacement traffic is perceived as unattractive, which makes it difficult for many citizens to use them.

AGNV claims to the DB

To improve the situation, AGNV demands, among other things:

  • A full -day line -up of the signal boxes between Nidda and Gießen from April 2025.
  • an optimized coordination of rail replacement.
  • better passenger information and a central accessibility of the control center.
  • the medium -term replacement of the old technology by electronic signal boxes.
  • an improvement in quality of stay, accessibility and connections at the train stations.
  • A long -term strategy for reducing route closures.

Rüdiger Krenkel, Managing Director of KVG Main Kinzig, sees the problem as a social problem. The railway has now recognized that the personnel bottlenecks have to be defused to ensure the reliability of the company. The resolution is supported by numerous representatives of the municipalities located on the railway line. The reactions of those responsible, especially in the town halls of the resident municipalities, are eagerly awaited.

rail infrastructure in the focus of Deutsche Bahn

Accompanying these developments, the modernization of the Lahntalbahn between Bad Ems and Nassau is also promoted. As the Deutsche Bahn reports, extensive construction measures will start here from November 25, 2024, which will last until April 3, 2025. This renewal work includes both the rail and station infrastructure with an investment volume of 36 million euros. Part of the project aims to contribute to the return to the “Stark Schiene” group strategy and the “S3” renovation program.

During the construction period, the regional express line RE 25 will be out of the section between Niederlahnstein and Nassau until December 14, 2024 and the RB 23 regional railway line. Instead, replacement traffic is set up by buses, which runs between Limburg (Lahn) and Weilburg, among other things. Additional connections are particularly offered for students.

An important point of the modernization work includes improving the lead and security technology in the sections of Limburg (Lahn) to Gießen Central Station and between Nassau and Limburg (Lahn). Information on the driving options and rail replacement traffic is available via the platforms of Deutsche Bahn.

These initiatives are in the context of the ongoing challenges in German rail transport, which were challenged by the 1994 rail reform. The reform at that time resulted in the separation of infrastructure and operation and should transform the DB into a competitive and customer -oriented provider. Despite the progress, many of the original goals have not been fully achieved due to persistent infrastructure problems and financial difficulties. The need to improve the rail infrastructure therefore remains a central topic on the political agenda.

The developments on the Lahn-Kinzig-Bahn and the upcoming modernizations show that both local and national solutions are urgently sought to make rail traffic in Hesse future-proof. These problems are not only a challenge for Deutsche Bahn, but also for the municipalities that rely on a functioning connection.
