New bike path opened between Schiersteiner Hafen and Biebrich!

On April 16, 2025, a new bike path between the Schiersteiner Hafen and the Rhine meadows in Biebrich was ceremoniously opened by traffic director Andreas Kowol (Greens). This five -meter -wide cycle path is not only usable for cyclists, but also for pedestrians and is intended to significantly improve mobility in the region. The aim of the expansion is to close an important gap in the everyday network as well as in the Hessian bike path R3, which serves as an important traffic axis for bicycle travelers. The construction work extended over six weeks, from the end of January to early April 2025, and cost around 355,750 euros, whereby the state of Hesse covered part of the costs.

The new section includes a length of 285 meters and runs safely under the Schiersteiner Bridge, separated from motorized traffic, which increases the safety of all user groups. In addition, when planning, care was taken to maintain the existing trees in the Rhine meadows, which underlines the environmentally friendly design of the path. Another construction phase for direct continuation towards Biebrich is also promised to further improve the connection.

direct use and construction progress

The bridge, which serves pedestrians and cyclists under the Schiersteiner bridge towards Mainz, cannot be used. The reason for this is that a sheet must be renewed on the Mainz side. This represents a temporary restriction, which will soon be remedied. According to an agreement between the city of Wiesbaden and Autobahn GmbH, the Steg will be reopened on April 25 at the start of the season of the Rettbergsaue leisure area. From this date, cyclists and pedestrians can reach the leisure area quickly and safely during opening hours.

It should be emphasized that about 180 meters of the new bike path run over a former railway area, which takes into account the historical context of the region and at the same time enables innovative use of the newly designed space. The construction was based on a comprehensive earth movement plan, in which a total of 800 cubic meters of earth masses were moved to create a stable and safe basis.

The commitment to the expansion of cycling not only contributes to improving local mobility, but also supports the federal government's climate goals. According to information from the BMDV, measures to promote cycling will be supported even more intensively in the future. Programs such as the “model project of cycling” and the “Radnetz Germany” that run by 2029 ensure the financial framework. The construction and maintenance of bike paths along the federal roads that are the responsibility of the federal government will be fully financed.
