statistics on traffic accidents
The traffic accident statistics in Germany recorded a total of 2,406,465 traffic accidents in 2022. Of these, 289,672 occurred with personal injury, which resulted in 2,788 fatalities. For comparison: In 2021, 2,314,938 accidents were registered, including 258,987 with personal injury and 2,562 fatalities. These figures come from the police data and crime statistics of the BKA, which are continuously used to analyze the traffic safety situation.
The [[destatis.de]] supports these statistics by providing comprehensive, differentiated and nationwide comparable data on traffic safety. The results of the police serve as the basis for measures in legislation, traffic education, road construction and vehicle technology.
Development of traffic safety
The development of traffic safety in Germany is a continuous process. Numerous measures have been taken since the 1970s, when the road dead reached a maximum. The German Bundestag decided in 1973 that the Federal Government was drawing an accident prevention report annually in order to promote the Federal Political Road Safety Strategy. This report has been created every two years since 1975.
The current program, the "traffic safety program of the Federal Government 2021 to 2030", controls traffic safety work in Germany. The measures are based on the knowledge from previous years and are intended to help lower the number of accidents and increase traffic safety. The [[mobilitaetsforum.bund.de]] emphasizes that continuous evaluation of the program content is necessary to meet the current challenges in transport policy.
