Price increase in Rheinfächre: Greens criticize new tariff structure!
The Rhine ferry between Altrip and Mannheim faces a major challenge. On January 1, 2023, the price structure was significantly adjusted, which led to violent criticism. The ferry, which is not part of the Rhein-Neckar Transport Association (VRN), has raised its tariffs due to the energy crisis. The price adjustments reflect that of the current economic situation, but citizens and environmental groups express concerns about the effects of this increase on environmentally friendly road users.
The new tariffs are problematic for many users of the ferry, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. The prices for pedestrians were increased from 0.50 euros to 1 euro, which corresponds to a rich surcharge of 100%. There is also a price increase from 1 euro to 1.50 euros for cyclists, which corresponds to an increase of 50%. The annual ticket prices are also increasing: for pedestrians from 90 euros to 180 euros (approx. 96% surcharge) and for cyclists from 184 euros to 270 euros (approx. 47% surcharge). For drivers, including drivers alone, the new price is 4.50 euros instead of 3.50 euros, which is equivalent to an increase of 28.5%. The annual ticket for cars now costs 648 euros, which encounters an increase of around 18.5%. The managing director of the Rheinfächre, Jacob, had in the Rheinpfalz Cyclists mentions what resentment caused again.
criticism from the Greens
The Greens in Altrip have sharply criticized the tariff change. In a press release, they emphasize that the price increases undermine the climate protection-promoting Germany ticket. The party therefore calls for a revision of the price structure in order to avoid the disadvantage of environmentally friendly road users. Cyclists and pedestrians in particular would be hindered by the new system in their mobility and thus in climate protection. This contradicts the goals of the cycling concept, which provides for the promotion of cycling.
The ferry has shown itself to be ready to talk, but also points out the challenges that are associated with the new tariff structure. These challenges concern not only the financing of the ferry, but also the consideration of CO2 emissions and space requirements for road users. So far, the company has ignored questions about the assessment basis of pricing, which further increases the displeasure of the user. Critics also notice the deterioration in the conditions for pedestrians and cyclists who are now exposed to the exhaust gases. A fair price and spatial policy was needed that better takes into account the climate-friendly road users.
Overall, it can be seen that the Rheinfeher Altrip-Mannheim is in a dilemma. Adaptation to the increasing costs after the energy crisis is essential, but the focus must be on sustainability and the support of environmentally friendly mobility. The discussion about the price increases will continue, and it remains to be seen whether the company will react to the justified claims of the citizens.
