Autumn magic on the Altrhein: Speyer Nature lover discovers sea eagle!

In the cold season, the Mechtersheimer Tongruben nature reserve attracts numerous bird observers in the Rhein-Palatinate district. The area, which belongs to the Römerberg local community, extends over around 33 hectares and consists of renatured clay pits. Here you will find a variety of lakes and ponds, through which height rates and small islands meander. These ecological peculiarities create living spaces for numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species that thrive in the nutrient-poor waters. Particularly noteworthy is the impressive variety of birds in winter, where the largest water bird stocks collect between October and March with up to 3000 birds, as birding-germany.de

The most common winter guests include protected bird species such as the seed goose, the gray goose, the rattling and the table duck. But also rare types such as the piston duck, the rfeiften and the skewer can be found regularly in the area. A special highlight is the significant breeding population of the purple rist, which nests there. The river terns use artificial nesting rods in the Riedwiesensee, but not always in a regular cycle. During the cooler months, bird observers can observe cormorants and various types of herons.

bird observation and accessibility

Bird observation in the nature reserve is possible all year round and particularly varied in the winter months. In order to optimally explore the rich wildlife, observation sites can be used both at a special hut and free places that offer excellent views. In order to achieve the area, it is advisable to set the goal for the navigation system to the Hannes dining area, Philippsburger Str. 52, 67354 Römerberg, and then follow the signage for the sound pit.

impressive sightings

The bird counts and observations have grown steadily compared to the past few months. A striking event was the encounter of Thimo Höffner from Speyer, who photographed a fish eagle at the Altrhein mountain houses last summer. At Christmas he also made a remarkable discovery when he saw a sea eagle in the Mechtersheim clay pits. These experiences not only illustrate the diversity, but also the uniqueness of the bird world in this region, which Höffner describes as extremely impressive, as
