Aid project in Lebanon: 20,000 euros for refugees and the needy!
The diocese of Speyer supported the project "Soforthilfe for Refugees and inland -selling people in the South Libanon" with a donation of 20,000 euros. This was announced by Auxiliary Bishop Otto Georgenens in a message. The "Fratelli project", which has been carried out by the Catholic Order of Christian School Brothers La Salle (FSC) and Maristen (FMS) in Beirut and Saida (Sidon) since 2015, is aimed at refugees from Iraq, Syria and needy Lebanese.
The Fratelli association is recognized as a non -governmental organization of Lebanese authorities and is supported by Missio Munich. The project aims to address the humanitarian needs of displaced families and impoverished local communities. Under normal conditions, it receives weekly care for around 1,300 people who include various support measures in the areas of education, family visits and the distribution of relief goods.
Humanitarian crisis and escape movements
Since September 17, 2024, there has been a wave of attacks and bombing from Israel, which strongly tighten the situation for many people in Lebanon. Many live in constant uncertainty and have to follow short -term evacuation commands. These developments have triggered a massive wave of expression, with thousands of families from the south relocated to safer urban areas. Around 90,000 displaced persons have recently arrived in Sidon, which has drastically increased the demand for living space, food and medical care.
Auxiliary Bishop Otto Georgenens expresses his concern about the situation in Lebanon. He visited Lebanon in April 2023 to get an idea of the situation on site. It should be noted that the economic and political situation in Lebanon was already tense before escalation, shaped by political instability, high inflation and record unemployment.
The "Fratelli project" not only offers humanitarian aid, but also education. It aims to offer disadvantaged groups the same opportunities and take into account the rights of the children by making them available to a safe environment. The project programs include early childhood education, basic education in reading and writing, as well as youth promotion and nutritional support. It promotes social cohesion through creative forms of expression such as art and music.
In view of the complex challenges caused by the war in Syria and the subsequent refugee crisis, around 1.5 million refugees from Syria have settled in Lebanon. This situation has a significant impact on Lebanon's social infrastructure, which already had fragile conditions before the crisis.
The living conditions of the refugee families are difficult: high unemployment, hardly any income and widespread violence are omnipresent, especially women and children. The lack of legal residence documents further exacerbates uncertainty.
The Fratelli project, initiated by the Marist and Lasallians, has set itself the task of providing social pedagogical support for these vulnerable groups in order to provide them with access to the Lebanese education system and to improve dark perspectives.
