Animal welfare calls for a bright ban: This is how pets suffer on New Year's Eve!

During New Year's Eve, many animal shelters and animal rescues in Germany experience a stressful time. This reports Simone Jurijiw, chair of the Frankenthal animal protection association, which describes the night as particularly stressful for animals. The bang leads to fear and panicked reactions in the animals. In order to relieve the stress of the animals, Jurijiw represents radios louder and closes roller shutters. She wishes a bright ban on the shelter to protect wild animals.

The animal protection association Bad Kreuznach, which also demands a ban on Böller near animal shelters, has a similar statement, but has not received any support from the city. Jens Strube, the second chairman of the association, reports on panicked animals. The Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Ministry also submitted an application for protective zones by animal shelters in the Federal Council, which, however, did not find a majority. Animal rescues in Rhineland-Palatinate also fight with stress-related incidents, such as running dogs. Kai Zöller from Animal Sunshine Farm indicates that 13 dogs have been run out last year.

recommendations for animal owners

The German Animal Welfare Association calls for a ban on private purchase and use of pyrotechnics on New Year's Eve. Kai Harstick from the Saar-Palatinate animal rescue suggests money that would otherwise be spent on fireworks to donate to social institutions.

While about 34.3 million pets live in Germany, a multiple of this number of wild animals suffers from the sounds and lights of the fireworks. Despite a ban on fireworks at the Hamburg Jungfernstieg and in front of the town hall, private commitment has increased in recent years. In 2022, the Germans spent around 180 million euros on fireworks.

In the HTV animal shelter in the new Süderstrasse, there is an emergency line -up, but not all animals can panic. Pets are particularly at risk on New Year's Eve because they can flee and injure themselves. For their security, dogs should only be carried out on a leash and calm areas and times with less noise should be chosen. Return options and marked and registered animals also help to minimize the risk of runoff.

In the Süderstraße animal shelter, around 700 animals are currently being housed. Instead of buying New Year's Eve, donations can be made to the shelter under the subject "Donations instead of firecrackers" to support sensible purposes.
