U17 submarine: A dive into the world of the submarine in the technology museum!

From early summer 2025, the Marine submarine U17 in the Sinsheim Museum Museum will be accessible to the public. The almost 50 meter long submarine, which was deployed from 1973 to 2010, transported from Speyer to Sinsheim in the summer of 2024. For this purpose, transport reinforcement strips are removed and supports welded. Access to the submarine is set up via a bridge that enables visitors to enter, similar to the submarines. Inside the submarine, the equipment is prepared so that vandalism is prevented by securing the lever and buttons. In addition, ventilation and a fire alarm system must be installed and the submarine must be connected to the power grid. Multimedia elements are integrated to offer an authentic experience with original sounds, lighting and monitors.

Visitors can use different sightseeing options in various areas of the submarine such as the bridge, the machine room, the combination, the shower and the beds. The corridors in the submarine are sometimes very narrow, with a width of only 80 to 100 centimeters and a through height of about 160 centimeters. Former occupation members are supposed to offer guided tours through the submarine and tell personal stories, such as Landfunker.de

A loan agreement with the technology Museums Sinsheim Speyer was concluded after discussions with the Federal Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr. The project costs amount to around two million euros, which were mainly financed by donations. After completing the work, the submarine will offer a unique experience for visitors who can experience the world of submarine rangers up close.
