Historical maps unfold the secret of the Dahner Felsenland!

On Tuesday, April 1, 2025, a lecture will take place in the VHS Center Dahn, located in Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse, under the title "The Dahner Felsenland or Wasgau in historical maps and aerial photographs". The speaker Christoph Amberger will report on the evaluation of old cards and aerial photos of the region from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The AG Heimatgeschichte of the Südwestpfalz district college organizes the event. The number of participants is limited and a registration with Dr. Jochen Braselmann is required. Admission to the event is 2 euros that are to be paid in the evening, a transfer is not possible.

The Dahner Felsenland, in the districts of Southwest Palatinate and Southern Wine Route, is one of the most picturesque regions of Rhineland-Palatinate and is characterized by its impressive low mountain landscape in the northwest of Wasgau. With an area of 160.3 km² and the Großer Eyberg as the highest summit - 513 meters above normal zero - the Felsenland offers hikers, climbers and nature lovers.

diverse leisure activities

The region is known for its spectacular rock formations from Buntsandstein, which not only offer a great panorama, but also enable numerous outdoor activities. The area is excellent for tourism, with a comprehensive network of hiking trails and trail routes. A total of twelve premium hiking trails alone are waiting for visitors, including the Felsenland Sagenweg, which was recognized in 2013 as the “Germany's most beautiful hiking trail”. In addition, there are three connoisseurs for cyclists and four specially designated mountain biker routes in the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park with a total length of 180 kilometers.

In addition, the Dahner Felsenland is a popular destination for climbers. With 50 designated climbing rocks, it is one of the most famous climbing areas in Germany. There are several bathing lakes for water sports enthusiasts in summer that invite you to swim, and the Felsland bathing paradise offers indoor and outdoor pools as well as a sauna all year round.

historical roots and transport connections

The region has a rich history that is reflected in the 16 castles and castle ruins, including the well -known Dahner Burgengruppe and the Burgen Berwartstein as well as Drachenfels, all of which are often built directly into the sandstone. The municipality of Dahn is considered the economic center of the region, while Hauenstein acts as a basic center. Historically, the shoe industry in the 19th and 20th centuries was an important economic factor, followed by a population decline from 1970.

The accessibility of the Dahner Felsenland is designed by the A8 and A65 motorways as well as the federal road 10 and B427. The Wieslauterbahn connects the town of Hinterweidenthal with Bundenthal and was reactivated in 1997 for excursion traffic on Sundays and public holidays, which also makes the region attractive for day trippers.

The natural and cultural landscape of the Dahner Felsenland offers both locals and visitors a varied leisure offer and is therefore an indispensable part of regional identity and tourism. The upcoming events, such as the above lecture, contribute to deepening knowledge about this multifaceted region and promote awareness of their historical and geographical importance.
