Traffic chaos on the B10: The expansion for Rhineland-Palatinate is so expensive!
The expansion of the B10 in Rhineland-Palatinate increasingly takes shape. Traffic on the main road will in future lead past the rock nose near Hauenstein. This measure is part of a larger plan that costs a total of 28 million euros and has used both time and resources. In the past ten years, around 2.8 million euros have already been invested in reports that are required to plan the six needs plan sections of the B10. During this time, a total of 66 reports have been drawn up, some of which are now considered outdated. This reports the Rheinpfalz.
The B10 fulfills a significant function within the transport network in Rhineland-Palatinate. It not only serves as an important collective and distribution rail for regional traffic, but also combines central points in the region. For example, around 16,000 vehicles rolled in Wilgartswiesen a day, while almost 36,000 vehicles were recorded in Landau. In addition, around 6,000 vehicles pass through the entire route between Pirmasens and Landau every day, which underlines the traffic meaning of this route. In freight heavy traffic, the loads are between 3,000 and 5,000 vehicles per day, with around 2,300 vehicles using the entire route. In view of these figures, traffic investigations forecast an increase in overall traffic by 9 to 16 percent and freight deferral by 10 to 20 percent, depending on the respective section of the route.
planning and investments
The importance of the B10 is also shown in the current state road construction program, which was presented by transport and economics minister Daniela Schmitt. The planned investments amount to around 293 million euros, which is an increase of 20 million euros. The draft of the program comprises a total of 421 individual projects, including 94 measures in the area of bridge construction and renovation, 260 to maintain the lanes and 6 new road construction projects. In addition, 37 projects are planned to improve cycling infrastructure.
Schmitt particularly emphasizes the positive effects of these investments on rural areas and their economic development. The state parliament is expected to decide in December on the 2025/2026 state road construction program, which also forms the basis for the following years. In the investment plan for 2024-2028, around 640 million euros are planned for 740 planned projects that are distributed on expansion, maintenance and renovation measures.
With these comprehensive plans, the B10 is not only the focus of the current traffic measures, but will continue to play a major role in the Rhineland-Palatinate transport network in the future. The state company Mobility (LBM) also plans to create a list of “planning lead” for projects that cannot be completed within the current term in order to ensure transparency through future developments in traffic planning.
