Jörg-Uwe Hahn: Anti-Semitism in Wetterau-that's how we want to remember!

On March 12, 2025, the FDP politician Jörg-Uwe Hahn vividly spoke about the topic of anti-Semitism during a visit to the synagogue in Pohl-Göns. Hahn emphasized the urgent need for suitable places for commitment and memory, criticizing the disappointing number of such places in the Wetterau. As a positive example, he cited the lively synagogue in Bad Nauheim, which serves as a sign of Jewish life in the region, while at the same time the excellent exhibition in Wetterauer Museum that deals with the life of the Jews before 1933

This exhibition, which was originally opened as part of the festival year 2021 "1700 years of Jewish life in Germany", should show that Jewish life is a natural part of society, including Wetterau. It was presented between April 3, 2022 and September 10, 2023 and offers a deep insight into the reality of Jewish life with photographs, objects and texts, especially in today's time.

Current challenges

After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the situation has changed not only in Israel, but also in Germany. More than 1100 people were killed and the number of anti -Semitic attacks has risen sharply. Jewish life in Germany is very endangered, which gives Hahn great worries. He expressed his disappointment with the reactions of intellectuals and politicians about the intergovernmental conflict and criticized the narrative that blames colonialism and the "white man" for the problems of the Palestinians.

Hahn pointed out that anti -Semitism is a historical problem with roots to early Christianity. The examination of this topic is essential to understand and combat the current climate or social division. One focus of his demands is on an increased examination of the local history of Wetterau and better networking of Jewish memorial locations.

education and perspectives

In order to counteract the increase in anti -Semitism, Hahn advocates municipal or school partnerships with Israel. He not only calls for academic processing of the events, but also the freedom of scientists without working without ideological restrictions. This includes the topics of free speech and free thinking as well as prejudice -free science. He also criticized the populist agitation, which simplifies complex social problems and thus leaves less space for the argument.

Finally, Hahn evaluated the positive decision of the Butzbach application "Living Democracy!" as confirmation of the commitment in the fight against undemocratic forces. The current situation shows that the challenges in the fight against anti -Semitism and for respectful coexistence are still urgent. Only through education, sensitization and an intensive culture of remembrance can a sustainable change in perception and acceptance of Jewish life in Germany be achieved.
