Kitchen chief on the high seas: Elmar Zusren experiences adventure in the Atlantic!
Elmar Zuszn, a 75-year-old former Smutje of the Gorch Fock, recently started his return to the world's oceans. This time as Smutje on the Alexander von Humboldt II , an impressive civilian sailing ship with a length of 65 meters and a sailing area 1360 square meters. The crew consists of 20 members, including spanned, who works as a chef in the combination during his trips.
The Alexander von Humboldt II was put into service by the German Foundation Sail. Under optimal conditions, the ship can reach speeds of up to 13 knots. Driving on such a ship is not only a challenge, but also a welcome opportunity for a client to demonstrate its culinary skills.
a life on the water
Zusren has already traveled the world's oceans twice: a four-week trip from Iceland to the Shetland Islands and Norway as well as a three-week trip from the Canaries to the Cape Verde. He describes the community on board as very enriching and enjoys the time on the upper deck with his colleagues. Together they experience exciting moments such as observing whales and dolphins, but also unsightly discoveries like an empty refugee boat.
The challenges in the combination should not be underestimated. Concumed, the difficulties that cooking brings with a rough sea, such as the swapping of soup in the tub. Despite these adversity, the passengers are more than satisfied with their culinary skills. Even students on board catch fish like Mahi-Mahi, whom he then prepared.
a networked experience
The Zuszam family is well known in the Fulda catering scene, which is underlined by its gastronomy, the forest restaurant Praforst, and the well-known pleasure festival in Fulda. This passion for cooking and the community is also evident during his time at Alexander von Humboldt II, where he regularly prepares a variety of dishes.
Despite the challenges associated with life at sea, the positive experiences predominate. Zusren has already received offers for other trips and is thinking about accepting them. His experiences on the ship are not only a return to his roots, but also a way to experience his love for cooking and community in a new way.
