Weststrichen Trier revives: new trains for commuters and students!

On March 3, 2025, the western route Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate was officially reactivated after decades of interruption. This new connection is not only a significant addition to the regional rail network, but also a connection between Trier and the neighboring Luxembourg. The total of around 19 kilometers long is served by three regional train lines every 30 minutes. This reports SWR Aktuell

In addition, four other stops are provided: Trier pallia, Trier-West, Trier-West and Trier-Zewen. These stops are intended to make access to the route easier and are designed in such a way that they enable barrier -free travel. For example, the pallien stop on the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge will be accessible with an elevator and stairs, while the stop will offer a park-and-ride facility with offset platforms.

transport connection and future planning

The expansion of the western route should be completed by the end of 2024, although the original opening for 2018/2019 was planned and was postponed several times. The route is currently only used for freight transport, but from the end of 2024 personal trains will run across the route. The expansion of the new train stations must be advertised in June, whereby each train station is treated as a single construction project. The planned train connections should benefit commuters and students, with two hourly connections between Wittlich and Luxembourg city as well as between Schweich and Saarburg.

Overall, the reactivation of the western route Trier illustrates the efforts in Germany that modernize and expand rail network. While many routes have already been reactivated in North Rhine-Westphalia, the development of the western route remains an important project for the regional connection in Rhineland-Palatinate and networking with Luxembourg.
