Volunteering for Mariahof: Together against loneliness in the district!

In the Mariahof district of Trier, the district meeting “We are Mariahof” has developed into an important center for neighborhood engagement since its foundation in 2011. Around 20 volunteers are ready to fight loneliness in their quarter. These committed citizens organize a variety of activities that aim to make life in the district more lively and inviting. SWR reports that play hours for children, coffee classes and advisory services for seniors are regularly offered.

The work of volunteers Irma May, Marlene Bonertz and Ludwig Limburg, who actively contribute to the project right from the start, should be particularly emphasized. Ludwig Limburg, who wants to continue working with people in his pension, sees his voluntary work as a possibility to give something back from his happiness. Irma May emphasizes the value of direct contact with the neighbors as an integral part of the success of the project.

diverse offers and opportunities for meeting

The project "We are Mariahof" has set itself the task of creating opportunities for meeting and initiating neighborhood aids. The district office with a citizens' meeting is supported by sponsors in the shop passage. Almost 5000 visitors took part in the 481 events in the district meeting last year, which underlines the importance of this place. In 2016, the volunteers performed over 1500 hours of volunteer work, which includes various educational and advisory services and a district café, which is open on weekdays.

The volunteers in the district meeting also play an important role in dealing with conflict between older visitors. Kerstin Katharina Vogel from Caritas emphasizes that there is a continuing need for helpers, especially for seniors. That is why young people with their own ideas are actively sought for expanding the offer.

financial challenges

Despite the great success, the project also faces challenges. Ludwig Limburg speaks of a lack of financial support that would arise from a budget lock of the city of Trier. This limits the social projects considerably and makes the search for new sponsors all the more urgent. Nevertheless, the volunteers plan to continue their work and feel joy in acting actively.

The diverse support options through neighborhood aid, which are also offered by other non -profit organizations, show how important such offers are. These range from help in household work to accompaniment to visits to the doctor to joint activities. The volunteers, who often work through voluntary services or civil society engagement, play an essential role in helping people in their environment. Caritas region Trier and active pensioners indicate that a close neighborhood aid not only contributes to relieving the person concerned, but also improving the coexistence in the districts.
