Fight for justice: film about Guantanamo in Trier!

On January 9, 2025, the University of Trier announces a number of events that deal with pressing social issues. Particularly noteworthy is the film screening "Rabiye Kurnaz against George W. Bush", which will take place on January 15, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. in the lecture hall 4 of the university. After the demonstration, the human rights attorney Bernhard Docke will be available to answer questions. The story focuses on the fight for the release of Rabiye Kurnaz 'son, who is detained in the notorious prison camp Guantanamo Bay. This event is carried out in cooperation with several partners, including the Jura and the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Justice.

Guantanamo Bay has been a place of controversies since its opening in 2002. The facility was founded by George W. Bush administration as part of the "war against terror". UN experts describe Guantanamo as a place of "unsurpassed celebrity" and "incessant human rights violations." Over 20 years after the opening, the camp continues to be exposed to serious allegations that have been documented by organizations such as Amnesty International. Reports on ill -treatment include torture practices such as water torture, sexual humiliation and inadequate medical care.

truth and justice for Guantanamo

The human rights situation in Guantanamo continues to throw shadows on the USA. According to Amnesty International, many of the currently 34 detained are without charges and procedures, while only 8% of the prisoners are considered members of al-Qaida. A current report from 2023 states that 30 prisoners suffered from "cruel, inhumane and humiliating treatment". It has also been found in recent times that a prisoner was regarded as an unfit for legal proceedings due to past ill -treatment.

The reports of the UN and Amnesty International illustrate the ongoing grievances. Even after years in custody, many imprisoned people have not been subjected to fair legal proceedings to this day. This raises questions about the law and the reasons for the continuation of the prisoner camp.

The University of Trier uses its events to raise awareness of such basic human rights issues and to promote a dialogue about the challenges of today. Guantanamo's exams are not only questions of justice for the detained, but also for the values that society considers to be respectable.
