New bollards for more security: Trier pedestrian zone is being redesigned!
On February 10, 2024, construction work begins to build bollards around the main market in Trier. This measure is part of a comprehensive urban security concept that aims to increase security in the pedestrian zone and regulate traffic. The affected streets are Simeonstrasse, Fleischstraße, Grabenstraße and Dietrichstrasse. The expected completion of the extensive construction work is planned for September 2024, with important events such as the old town festival.
Simeonstrasse is a particularly frequent place in Trier, which is visited annually by almost 10 million passers -by. In view of the tragic amicula in 2020, in which six people, including a baby, were killed, the city has recognized the urgency of such a security budget. Department of Building Dr. Thilo Becker has emphasized that complete protection is not possible and always remains a residual risk.
Important details about the construction work
The construction work in the meat road starts on February 10 and are carried out in two sections, with an expected conclusion in late April 2024. From this point on, the meat road will become a dead end for several weeks. Vehicles with a weight of over 3.5 tons are not allowed to enter, while smaller vehicles can drive in and out via Stresemannstrasse. However, pedestrians and wheelchair users are not affected and can continue to use the street.
In March 2024, the work on Simeonstrasse will be resumed, followed by Grabenstrasse, where the start of construction for May 2024 will start. The last construction phase in Dietrichstrasse is scheduled to begin in July 2024. To install the bollards, the streets have to be dug up to three meters deep.
urban security concept
The urban security concept, which, in addition to the bollards, also includes a test operation for retractable bollards at the Domfreihof, starts on March 4, 2024. This concept aims to prevent unauthorized vehicle access through fixed and retractable bollards and other blockages. The city council has taken special precautions to ensure that the fire brigade, emergency services, police and garbage disposal receive access at any time.
In order to regulate the entrance, authorized persons such as parking space owners need corresponding exceptional permits that can be applied for online from January 29, 2024. Temporally limited delivery times in the pedestrian zone are set at 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. The pedestrian zone is also expanded under the security concept to reduce traffic to high school.
Future view
The original Poller concept was developed in 2019/20 to regulate traffic and to promote climate protection in the long term. The introduction of these security measures in Trier is in a larger context of urban transformation processes, which are sought in many cities to improve quality of life and security. The measures are also part of a global initiative for sustainable urban development, which results from cooperation between cities, research institutions and international organizations.
The number of events on the main market remains largely untouched by the construction work, since the course of the construction work was coordinated with the city's calendar. With this concept, the city of Trier shows a strong commitment to the security and quality of life of its citizens and visitors.
