Unusual emergency: Half pig saves life in Ludwigshafen!
On May 1, 2025, an exceptional emergency operation took place in the BG accident clinic in Ludwigshafen. The patient, half a pig with a breast basket of more than a meter long, caught the attention of the emergency paramedics. The body was excluded, without extremities and head, which made the situation both challenging and bizarre. Emergency paramedics Moritz Kraft took on the difficult task of performing a chestrainage.
The thoracic drainage is a life -saving measure to remove air or liquid from the chest area. Kraft explained that a precise cut above the ribs was necessary so as not to violate nerve pathways and blood vessels. The processes are extremely detailed: First, the scalpel is set and cut several centimeters along the ribs. The finger is then inserted into the cut to push the muscle tissue apart and open the rib fur. It is of great importance that no lung tissue attached to the inside of the chest.
The implementation of a chestrainage
After the first, careful cuts, Moritz power introduced a transparent plastic hose into the chest, which represents the crucial step towards drainage. Successfully positioned, the hose must then be sewn to ensure that it stays on the spot. These precise manual skills are a fundamental competence for emergency paramedics who are required in critical situations.
In order to deepen the knowledge of such invasive emergency techniques, a specialized seminar is offered on November 15, 2025. This takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the anatomical institution in Munich and is limited to a maximum of 18 participants. The event is aimed exclusively at doctors, and medical assistance professions are excluded from participation in order to ensure the quality of the practical exercises.
Details for the seminar in Munich
The seminar management takes over Dr. Christian Markus, who will familiarize the participants with the basics and indications for invasive emergency techniques. Practical exercises are planned, which include the following topics:
- emergency coniotomy
- thorax drainage
- respiratory management
- Access in emergency medicine
The costs for participation are € 575.00 for members and € 665.00 for non-members, each inclusive. It is recommended to register early, since the full payment of the course fee is due at the time of booking. Cancellation conditions apply in the event of resignation and should be observed accordingly.
The event is particularly suitable for specialists who want to improve their skills in dealing with emergency situations and is supplemented by practical exercises. Techniques such as intubation, video laryngoscopy and intraossary cannulases can be learned, among other things. Demonstrations for intraossary application with the fast system are also planned.
The journey to the anatomical institution can be conveniently done by public transport. Among other things, participants can use the U3 or U6 subway lines to Goetheplatz, whereby it should be planned for about five minutes. The footpath is about ten minutes from the main train station.
The importance of emergency paramedics and their ability to make quick and precise decisions in critical situations seems more important than ever today. Disaster protection and the training in invasive techniques are therefore essential in order to be able to provide effective help in unusual and challenging scenarios. As FAZ.net not only theoretical knowledge, but are also required practical, often spontaneous skills in real life. This is further underlined by the upcoming training on November 15, 2025 in Munich, which is organized by AgBN.de
