Peace bell in Saarburg: A symbol of hope and cohesion
On April 8, 2025, a small peace place in Saarburg was inaugurated in the cultural gourmet. This symbolic act combined representatives of various organizations, including the Saarburg Transport and Beautification Association, the Society for Security Policy Saarburg as well as the cultural foundation and the Brockscheid bell foundry. The central attraction of the square is a peace bell that was cast as part of the All4peace three -country project.
The installation of the square was designed by the transport and beautification association in close coordination with the cultural foundation. The costs for the foundation of the bell and an accompanying information board amounted to around 3,000 euros, which were borne by the transport and beautification association. In addition, the Society for Security Policy Saarburg donated a Peace Lord that further enriches the place.
peace bell as a symbol of unity
dr. In her speech, Anette Barth, managing director of the cultural foundation, emphasized the enormous importance of the All4peace project and thanked everyone involved for their commitment. The Pakebell project, initiated by Michael Patrick Kelly in 2017, has now developed from an art project to a comprehensive social project. The peace bell is a strong symbol of peace and striving to build bridges between people.
As part of the project, a total of three peace bells were cast together with the "Maison Citoyenne" in Mamer (L) and the "World Center for Peace" in Verdun (F). The peace bell will serve as a meeting point in the Museum of the Mabilon bell foundry and at various exhibitions in order to promote cohesion in a world of conflict. The choice of the location in the former bell foundry, which was shaped by the Mabilon family from 1770 to 2002, underlines the historical meaning of this place.
bells as a cultural heritage
In the large region of Saarburg, Mamer and Verdun, the three bells that symbolize peace, freedom and friendship have been beating since May 2023. The bells were poured as part of the #peebell project, which began in 2021 with the exhibition of a peace bell by Michael Patrick Kelly. The idea for this remarkable peace project came about between 2022 and 2023 and is a tribute to the history of the region, which is characterized by territorial conflicts, especially during the Second World War, but also of friendships that were strengthened by the Schengen area.
The three bells were made in the bell & art casting Hermann Schmitt in Brockscheid made of bronze, which consists of at least 60% copper and tin and must be melted at 1100 to 1200 degrees Celsius. The bells were public on May 7, 2023 on the occasion of the Europe Day in Schengen. The project was accompanied by the author Nicole Marzi, who documents the creation in the book "Three Glocks for Peace". This book appears in German, Luxembourg and French and is published by the local alliance for family in VG Saarburg-Kell e.V. A book presentation with a performance for peace and human dignity will take place on December 1, 2023 in the Saarburg cultural foundation.
