Ceremonial inauguration: New reading space opened in Seelscheid!
On May 12, 2025, the official inauguration of the newly designed village square in Seelscheid took place in front of the library. The mayor, Nicole Berka, announced the name "Reading Platz" on this occasion, which was determined by a competition. The redesign of the square cost a total of 52,000 euros and aimed to create a cultural meeting point for the community from a previous meadow.
Initiator of the project was Anna Deter, the head of the community library, who launched the idea in November 2022. In April 2023, the project received funding from the LEADER program of the European Union after the grant notice was granted in May 2024. The conversion of the square lasted half a year and included various elements such as seating, a game course, a wooden hut and a garden.
cultural encounters
The wooden hut was financed by the Kollmitz Foundation and is available as a place for readings and cultural events. The place is now invitingly designed and offers rustic gravel paths and seven benches made of sustainable material. Numerous organizations, foundations and the project office together with the municipal administration were involved in the planning process for two years.
A special highlight of the inauguration was the unveiling of a work of art by the artist Rolf Baum, which represents the coat of arms of Neunkirchen-Seelscheid made of metal. Baum unveiled the work of art together with Mayor Berka and Anna Deter in front of the assembled visitors.
public commitment
The newly designed reading space is not only a new place for cultural encounters, but also symbolizes the openness for visitors of all ages and origin. Deter emphasized that the square is a space for all people in the community, a place that promotes the connection between the generations.
The village square was completed on time for spring and opened its doors on May 9, 2025 at 4 p.m. The planning and implementation details of the project were developed in cooperation with the Office for Community Development and the Building Office. The financing was made up of donations from the Helga and Bodo Kolmitz Foundation and local associations.
By integrating elements that appeal to both children and adults, the square becomes a lively place in Seelscheid, which is supposed to bring the community closer together. The promotion from the LEADER program is particularly supported by this project-charged commitment to rural developments.
