Kaufland revolutionizes emptiness return: new machines for more comfort!
The Supermarket Chain Kaufland has recently been faced with negative headlines, especially because of grievances in several branches that are criticized in terms of hygiene. In order to counteract this, Kaufland has now announced that they are introducing innovative pawns machines at five other locations, which have been tested in Steinheim since spring 2025 and will now be used there permanently. This measure could not only improve the public image of Kaufland, but also increase customer satisfaction.
The new deposit machines come from Tomra and are introduced at the following locations: Dortmund (Bornstraße), Ludwigsburg (Schwieberdinger Straße), Worms (Schönauer Straße) and Ahrensfelde (Landsberger Chaussee). Another machine will be available in the Kaufland branch in Leipzig (Kiewer Straße) from mid-May. These devices are equipped with a multi-feed system, which enables several bottles and doses to throw in at the same time.
technical innovation and advantages for customers
The new machines that are used as Tomra R2 in the Crystal version ensure faster and more intuitive return of empty. With an illuminated touchscreen, the return process is significantly simplified for customers. The empties are sorted automatically and a deposit is issued, which makes the return much more efficient.
Florian Hermanski from Kaufland Germany emphasizes the significant advantages of the new machines, especially for customers who want to return larger amounts of empties. The speed of the return process can be up to five times faster than with conventional machines, which is a considerable plus in times when many people return their empties.
commitment to sustainability
Thomas Løstegård, Managing Director of Tomra Systems GmbH, recognizes Kaufland's commitment to innovation and sustainability. The integrated process and the possibility of returning both PET bottles, doses and glass bottles not only offer customers comfort, but also support environmentally conscious disposal.
Although the acquisition costs for the new machines are higher, Kaufland relies on the positive feedback from customers with regard to the improved service quality and reduced waiting times. In the long term, these steps could help strengthen the Kaufland brand in the competitive environment and to position yourself as a pioneer in the area of sustainable solutions in retail.
