Resignation of the Minister of Police! Is that Israel's government threatening that?
Israel's right-wing extremist police minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has declared his resignation today. This step takes place as a protest against the recently decided ceasefire agreement with Hamas. His party, Otzma Jehudit, leaves the government coalition. This political crisis unfolds within a sensitive temporal framework in which the Israeli government has decided to approve a ceasefire that is supposed to come into force on Sunday. Otzma Jehudit has six out of 120 seats in the Knesset, while the right -wing religious government under Benjamin Netanyahu continues to keep a narrow majority of 62 seats. However, this majority could be endangered if other ministers, as the finance minister Bezhalel Smotrich, decide.
Ben-Gvir expressed sharp criticism of the agreement that provides for the release convicted murderer. He warned that these people could commit attacks again in the future. His threat of returning to the government if necessary, if Israel resigns against Hamas, the tensions within the coalition illustrates. Opposition leader Jair Lapid offered the government a "security network" in parliament in this tense situation to support the implementation of the agreement.
Details about the ceasefire
The agreement stipulates that 33 out of 98 hostages will be released over the next six weeks. In return, Israel has to relieve hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from prisons. The details of the first Humaine step of the agreement, which is supposed to come into force at 7:30 a.m. CET, are clearly outlined. In a meeting of the Israeli government, 24 Minister voted for the agreement, while 8 ministers, mostly from the right warehouse, voted. Interestingly, this session took place during the Jewish rest day, which caused some ultra -orthodox ministers to leave the session prematurely.
Sources of supply report that the border crossing Rafah between Egypt and Gaza is opened to enable humanitarian aid for the Palestinians. The Israeli military also plans to withdraw from densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip. The first three hostages are to be released on Sunday, the identity will soon be announced. Further hostages should then follow every seven days after the first release. The first hostages are received by the Red Cross as well as Egyptian and Qatarian teams, and a medical examination is carried out in Israel.
political reactions and outlook
The approval of the agreement was praised by Israel President Izchak Herzog, even if resistance from right -wing politicians can be expected. Opponents of the agreement have the opportunity to object to the Supreme Court of Israel, but it is not expected to intervene. The first phase of the fire break, which is supposed to take a total of 42 days, forms the basis for the further course of the agreement. During this time, the details for the second and third phases are to be negotiated, which should include the complete release of all living hostages and the reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.
