Experience Europe up close: firmly for Europe day in Saarbrücken!

On May 9, 2025, Europe Day will be celebrated in Saarbrücken with a public information and hands-on event. The event takes place on Reichsstrasse in front of the European gallery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and bears the motto: "This is how Europe promotes the Saarland". The event is organized by the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Women and Health, the State Chancellery of the Saarland, the Ministry of Economics, Innovation, Digital and Energy as well as the Ministry for the Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection.

The focus of Europe Day is the visibility and experience of European cooperation. In addition to an action mile with information stands, there will also be hands -on activities such as face painting and sack hole game. The event aims to show the effect of EU funding (e.g. ESF+, Efre, Interreg, ELER) in Saarland. All interested parties are cordially invited to take part in the festival and discover Europe at the local level. Sandy Stachel, press spokeswoman, is available for questions, which can be reached at Mainzer Straße 346, 66111 Saarbrücken.

Interreg projects to strengthen the region

As early as March 2025, ten new Interreg projects that aim to strengthen the Saarland economically, ecologically and socially begin. These projects are supported with funding of up to 3.7 million euros via the programs Interreg Greater Region, Northwest Europe and Europe. In addition, the Saarland receives additional funding of around 4 million euros from the state government.

The Interreg Groß Region program in particular promotes cooperation between Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Luxembourg, Belgium and Lorraine. Of the twelve approved projects of the second project call 2024, the Saarland is involved in eight projects, of which it acts as a lead partner in three cases. The standing projects include:

project name leading institution destination
Algae Boost htw saar Development of a flexible algae production process
fablabs4innovation University of the Saarland Networking of regional test workshops for founders and students
Trafo Gr Tourism Central Saarland Development of sustainable tourism offers based on comprehensive data

David Lindemann, the head of the State Chancellery and European legally represented, emphasizes the importance of these projects as the key to strengthening the Saarland as an innovation location. The Interreg projects are part of a broader strategic initiative to position the region in a total European context.

The role of i3 for interregional cooperation

In parallel to the Interreg projects, the financing instrument i3 is relevant that supports interregional projects and partnerships. This program is funded by the European Commission as part of the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE) with around 570 million euros. I3 aims to increase the potential for innovation within the EU and bring together both strongly developed and less developed regions.

i3 promotes in particular:

  • Interregional innovation: Financing and advice for existing partnerships in investments.
  • newly founded partnerships: Development of value chains in less developed regions.

The projects within the framework of I3 are specifically aimed at consortia that consist of several institutions of different EU regions and underline the need to create synergies between different funding programs.

Through these diverse initiatives, Saarland and the EU rely on a sustainable and innovative future that promotes both regional growth and international cooperation.
