Saarland copes with flood damage: 33 million for quick help!

The Saarland state government passed a supplementary budget in December 2024, which comprises measures to remedy flood damage of 33 million euros. These funds are intended in particular for the consequences of the devastating flood disaster in July 2021, which has caused considerable damage in Saarland, as reported on the Völklingen page.

According to the latest estimates, the total damage amount is around 46.16 million euros. Interior Minister Reinhold Jost said that immediate aid of 5 million euros had already been paid to affected municipalities. This financial support is granted as a flat rate that flows directly to the municipalities and municipal associations without applying.

distribution of the funds

The distribution of the 33 million euros takes place in accordance with the components of the municipalities in the total damage. The following amounts are provided for the individual regions:

Region assigned funds
Regional Association Saarbrücken approx. 9.76 million euros
district of Merzig-Wadern approx. 2.01 million euros
district of Neunkirchen approx. 6.3 million euros
district of Saarlouis approx. 8.03 million euros
Saarpfalz-Kreis approx. 4.35 million euros
district of St. Wendel approx. 2.55 million euros

Financial aid can be used for the removal of damage, the reconstruction of infrastructure, cleanup, disposal, the replacement of material and the financing of auxiliary forces. In addition, another tranche of 5 million euros will be provided as a need for needs this year.

funding opportunities and application procedures

The flood aid is closely associated with the regulation on property damage resulting from the flood disaster. According to information from the federal government, damage caused by wildly flowing water, fall floods and other causes is eligible if they have occurred directly from the flood events. Applications of funding can be made by June 30, 2026, which gives the injured party enough time to assert their claims.

The minimum damage height for funding is 5,000 euros, whereby costs for the elimination of damage to residential buildings, demolition and cleanup as well as monument protection measures can be reimbursed. A substantiality of the funding is that up to 80% of the eligible costs can be covered, whereby 100% is even reimbursed for household compensation points.

In addition, the regulation enables multiple funding as long as the total amount of the funding does not exceed the total expenditure. This could be particularly advantageous for the injured party who want to make more than one application for different types of damage.

Overall, these measures show that the Saarland state government is actively working to tackle the consequences of the flood disaster. The various support measures and funding opportunities should help the affected communities to get back on their feet as soon as possible.
