Protests against AfD: Climate protection in the focus of the demonstrators in Saarbrücken
On Friday, February 15, 2025, numerous demonstrators gathered in front of the Ludwigskirche in Saarbrücken to protest against the New Year's reception of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saarbrücken Castle. The event was supported by a large number of groups, with the police temporarily counting up to 2500 people who came together around 6:00 p.m. and moved to the castle. Among the protesters were members of Fridays for Future, who had previously called for a climateemony to draw attention to the pressing climate debate. These activists also criticized the fact that climate protection in the current election campaign is not given too little attention.
The protest itself was mostly peaceful, despite individual incidents in which there were verbal attacks on AfD members. In two cases, people are investigated by incitement to passers -by who had insulted the demonstrators. During the protest there was occasionally litter attacks with tomatoes and potatoes. To de -escalate the situation, the police started pepper spray to prevent a group of demonstrators from climbing shut -off grilles.
variety of protests
The participation in the demonstration not only includes the circles of the climate movement, but also anti -fascist groups that highlight the connection between climate protection and social justice. According to a report by UNDE.de, it is inseparable for many activists to look at environmental and social issues together. Farmer Charly, an activist of the movement, emphasizes that a clear anti -fascist attitude is essential for achieving climate justice. This also became clear during the other campaigns of Fridays for Future, in which older people were also involved and the demonstrations reinforced the alliance between climate protection and anti -fascism.
Around 350 participants took part in the climate strike from Fridays for Future in Saarland. With the slogan "Cats would choose the climate", the activists drew attention to their demands. These include, among other things, an exit from fossil fuels by 2035 and the introduction of a rich tax to finance climate protection measures.
intersectional approaches
The merger of various initiatives that work for climate protection shows that the topic has an intersectional dimension. Activists of pier emphasize that climate protection and social justice are linked. The initiative Decolonize also calls for combining the topics of racism and environmental protection. This shows that the current protests are not only a reaction to political grievances, but also to the need to address social injustices in the context of climate change.
The movement remains determined to maintain its pressure on politics and already announces further measures to draw attention to the ignorance of the politically responsible. According to UNDE.de, civil disobedience is also not excluded as a strategy in order to persuade the political actors into more commitment in the field of climate protection.
While the argument about political perspectives and social values continues in Germany, the expansion of the protest movements to different social areas shows that the demands for justice and a sustainable future are supported by more and more people.
