Saarland starts digital educational revolution: tablets for all students!

In Saarland, a revolutionary change will be implemented in the school educational landscape from summer 2024. All students from the third class are to be equipped with digital end devices. This announced Minister of Education Christine Streichert-Clivot (SPD), who intends to anchor digital education by law. Saarland wants to ensure that all children and adolescents have access to modern, digital learning aids.

The Council of Ministers has already decided new regulations that are considered an important milestone in this process. So far, 137 million euros have already been invested in the digital infrastructure of the schools, with 55 million euros come from state -owned funds. These investments are part of the Digitalpact School 2020 - 2024, which has a budget of around 67 million euros, of which around 60 million euros in federal funds are. The funds are used by school providers such as the counties and municipalities, to install powerful WLAN, cabling, projector and smartboards in schools, which has already made numerous schools in Saarland.

digital learning for everyone

According to the new law, all teachers and students from third class will receive tablets to ensure uniform equipment standards. Saarland will thus be the first federal state in Germany to provide digital equipment and learning content together. In order to promote access to these devices, the end devices are leased, which enables current technology to always offer.

In addition, the textbook on the school year 2026/27 will be set nationwide to 160 euros. This should also benefit socially weaker families. In this context, the student development law for recipients of citizen benefit or social assistance is adapted to ensure better funding.

a concept for the future

Another central element is the obligation of the schools to develop a comprehensive media concept that regulates the use of all digital learning tools. The need to further expand the digital infrastructure is undisputed. Around two thirds of the schools in Saarland already benefit from investments in modern IT equipment, which is intended to support the integration of digital instruments into class and at the same time promote equal opportunities.

Future digital learning will make the lessons more individual and seamstress. Children and adolescents will be able to work both in the team and independently, which strengthens their creativity and ability to cooperate.

The draft law on digital education will be transferred to an external hearing and is to be brought in in the state parliament on April 9, with the aim of entering into force on August 1, 2025. This future -oriented project is part of a broader initiative of the federal government to improve the digital educational infrastructure, supported, among other things, by billions of funds as part of the digital pact, which is to achieve an estimated 29,300 schools in Germany by June 30, 2024.

Overall, the plans of the Saarland under the direction of Education Minister Strichert-Clivot take an important step towards a modern, digital educational landscape that meets the requirements of the 21st century and at the same time creates the prerequisite for contemporary learning.
