Mushroom fans Saar-Palatinate: The secret kings of mushroom science!

In the heart of the Saarland, more precisely in Oberbexbach, the mushroom association Mushroom Freunde Saar-Palatinate has a long history that goes back to 1983. Founded by 13 interested parties, the first steps to form a club took fruit when the original title "Association of Mushroom Freunde Pirmasens e. V." was awarded. Over the years, the association developed and gained additional dynamics through the formation of several local groups and working groups in 1992.

The new structures included the local groups Mainz and Bexbach as well as the working groups "Mais" and Münchweiler. As a result of the developments, the club name in 1992 was in "Association of Mushroom Freunde Pfalz e. V." changed. However, this renaming should not be the last step: in 1996, during a crucial general meeting, the headquarters of the main club was moved from Pirmasens to Bexbach. At the same time, it was decided to the association in "Milzfreunde Saar-Pfalz e. V." to redesign what shapes today's identity of the association. The association is today the only one of its kind in Saarland.

The association now has over 200 members who are committed to the introduction and further education in the popular fungus science. The diverse activities include excursions, mushroom -like weekends as well as exhibitions and determination evenings. Special priorities are set in spring when the members deal with orchids, wild herbs and medicinal plants. A central concern of the association is also the promotion of nature conservation and landscape maintenance, whereby the clarification of the population about the ecological importance of mushrooms is in the foreground.

Another goal is to encourage the population to collect properly and to protect rare species. As part of these tasks, it becomes clear how important the information and knowledge of local mushroom types are in nature conservation. The mushroom friends not only support the understanding of nature, but also the preservation of a valuable part of the regional flora.

The mushroom fans Saar-Palatinate are also active in a broader context, such as the accompanying program "Mushroom Kingdom" of the Weikersheim Tauberphilharmonie, which is to take place from August 23 to October 9, 2024. Here, among other things, information on fresh mushroom determination and its use in the kitchen are provided.

The work of the association is limited not only to excursions, but also to scientific efforts, such as the care of mushroom protection areas, mapping and documentation. Monthly excursions and an annual larger mushroom excursion offer members a constant opportunity to exchange and further education.

The commitment of mushroom friends Saar-Palatinate manifests itself through all activities, events and requests for ecological responsibility.
