Kaufland in Homburg: Refurbishment according to hygiene scandal until the end of 2025!

In Saarland, the Kaufland branch in Homburg is fundamentally modernized. This measure is intended to make the branch the “most modern Kaufland branch in Saarland”. The step takes place in response to considerable hygiene defects, which were discovered in reports of stern and rtl . Among other things, the striking problems included a mouse infestation. Therefore, an administrative offense procedure has already been initiated. The branch has been closed since last Friday.

Kaufland plans to invest a double -digit million amount in the comprehensive renewal of the market. The aim is to complete the work by the end of 2025. Part of the conversions are the exchange of refrigerated furniture, the renovation of the water pipe network and the renewal of customer toilets and social rooms. New management should also be used to improve quality.

measures to improve hygiene

The hygiene defects have put pressure on Kaufland. Cleaning measures started weeks before the reports. The Verdi union spoke of "cleaning orgies", in which sales employees were temporarily converted into cleaning staff. In a nationwide examination, hygiene defects were found in 48 out of 50 Kaufland branches, including in the branch in Lebach.

In order to improve the hygiene standards, Kaufland plans to introduce a 5-point plan. This includes the renewal of outdated refrigerated furniture and training for employees to freshen and hygiene. Independent experts should also be used for internal hygiene controls. Kaufland invests around 500 million euros annually in the renovation of the refrigerated furniture to ensure that the statutory hygiene standards are observed.

Kaufland belongs to the black group, which also includes Lidl. With over 770 branches in Germany and around 90,000 employees, the group generates sales of around 167 billion euros annually. Kaufland maintains nine branches in Saarland.

regulations and responsibilities

All food companies, including retailers, are subject to strict EU hygiene law regulations. These regulate that food must be safe at all levels of production, processing and sales. The requirements are specified in the EU regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 and No. 853/2004. The aim of these regulations is to secure the quality of the food to consumers.

The hygiene awareness and the behavior of everyone involved are crucial for food safety. Special care in the case of unpacked food is particularly required in retail, which are consumed without prior washing or heating. Kaufland, like many retailers, is responsible for ensuring that the food offered corresponds to the hygiene regulations.
