New Year's Eve 2024: Faeser warns of violence, security forces in action!

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser has announced that the security forces are tough on violence and riots on New Year's Eve. Your goal is to ensure a happy and peaceful New Year's Eve festival for all citizens. Faeser emphasizes that against any violence must be intervened quickly and consistently. Particularly violent perpetrators who attack police and emergency services should feel the full hardness of the law.

Two years ago, on New Year's Eve, there were massive attacks on emergency services in Berlin and other cities in Germany. Faeser is reminiscent of the recent changes in the law that enable more strict controls of weapons and knives, especially at public events. These measures should contribute to increasing security. The federal police also become active by carrying out controls at train stations and having issued bans for pyrotechnics and dangerous objects where it is necessary. In addition, the federal police will support the police in the countries with strong forces and the security authorities observe the situation with great vigilance, especially after the attack in Magdeburg.

Violence against emergency services in Berlin

33 emergency services were violated by attacks on New Year's Eve in Berlin. The police and fire brigade had to defend pyrotechnics. In the meantime, an estimated 22 citizens were injured: inside. Berlin's ruling Mayor Franziska Giffey was shocked by the extent of violence, while Faeser called for criminal consequences for attacks on emergency services and police officers.

Faeser pointed out that the criminal regulations for the protection of police and rescue workers have been tightened in recent years. The Berlin Senator Iris Spranger sees the legal innovations a way to improve the situation. The last penalty of punishment came into force in May 2017 to strengthen the protection of enforcement officers and rescue workers. A general ban on firecrackers is being discussed, as has been in Berlin in the past two years. This year there were only three prohibition zones in Berlin, in which no special occurrences were reported.

The discussion about a nationwide ban on firecrackers gains driving. The cultural senator Klaus Lederer and the chairman of the Berlin union, Stephan Weh, spoke out for this. Politicians from Union and FDP, on the other hand, reject a general ban on firecrackers. Thorsten Frei from the CDU argued that the behavior of criminals should not punish the peaceful celebrants. CDU state chief Kai Wegner also emphasized that a social problem could not be solved solely with a ban on firecrackers.
