Speed marathon in Hesse: Police relies on intensive speed controls!

On Wednesday, April 9, the European “Speedmarathon” will take place, a day of action supported by the Hessian police and several municipalities. The aim of this initiative is to draw the population aware of the dangers of speed overruns and increase traffic safety. The controls will take place between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and include both announced and unannounced speed measurements.

The police authorities use the latest technology to effectively monitor speed violations. These include hand laser measuring devices, mobile and inpatient speed measuring devices as well as civilian company vehicles that are equipped with calibrated measurement technology. Mobile speed measuring trailers are also used. These measures are particularly important because excessive speed is one of the most common causes of serious and fatal traffic accidents, as the police emphasized.

speed controls in Barnim

The control week by the Brandenburg and Barnim police last until next Friday and focuses particularly on speed and aggression offenses. These accompanying measures are necessary to lower the high number of accidents in which excessive speed plays a role. In 2022 there were 4,866 traffic accidents due to speed violations, which illustrates how urgently the topic is.

The annually increasing number of accidents

Although the number of traffic fatalities has dropped, excessive speed remains the most common cause of the accident. In 2022, 1,208 accidents with an impact of trees ended, which 36 people died. The statistics show that a total of 15,079 accidents with impact on trees were registered in Germany from 1991 to 2022, with 479 road participants lost their lives. Mathias Funk, head of the traffic matters and traffic accident prevention, emphasizes the importance of prudent driving behavior.

A comprehensive evaluation of the control week will be published next Monday and is intended to develop targeted measures to improve traffic safety. These measures are based on current data, which are recorded by the traffic statistics, among other things, in order to obtain a more precise picture of the accident dangers. Information on this can be found in the Statistics of the Federal Government
