Sport in the district of Olpe: Celebrate success and master challenges!

The football circle Olpe remains under the proven direction of Joachim Schlüter, who, as district chairman, emphasizes the comprehensive implementation of the protection concept for the sports clubs. This step is intended to ensure that each club develops an individual protection concept to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Schlüter also paid tribute to Theo Melcher's presence, which he sees as a sign of appreciation for sport in the district of Olpe. Despite the financial difficulties of the municipalities, he demands consistent sports funding and argues that it should not be saved in sports, but by sport itself.

A look at the past three years illustrates developments within the district. 128 active referees are currently involved in football. The efforts to obtain new referees were successful, but the guarantee remains questionable for a complete cast of all C-league games. The number of district league teams dropped from 83 in the 2022/23 season to only 74 in the 2024/25 season. However, the increase in youth teams at 16, while the number of women's teams has remained stable at five.

success in the athletics area

The athletics clubs are also remarkably active as part of sports in the district of Olpe. The district has a total of 13 athletics associations or departments as well as a starting community, and the successes of these athletes cannot be overlooked. Schlüter emphasizes that the athletes from Olpe can compete with strongholds such as Wattenscheid, Leverkusen and Cologne. The SG Wenden is particularly worth mentioning, which is one of the best clubs in Germany in the running competitions for Ü30 in both women and men.

The role of the sports clubs

The importance of sports clubs is underpinned by the 2017/2018 sports development report, which was based on three online surveys that were carried out in autumn 2017 and spring 2018. The clubs surveyed not only make valuable contributions to sporting activities, but also play a central role in society. A focus is on community, democratic participation and the qualification of instructors and trainers. The offers of the clubs are particularly diverse and designed for health promotion.

Nevertheless, these clubs face challenges. The biggest hurdle remains the binding and extraction of volunteers, trainers, trainers and arbitrators. The motivation of the volunteers is often based on intrinsic factors and not on material incentives, which became clear in the surveys. In addition, many volunteers stated that they were dissatisfied with the tax benefits in volunteering.
