On April 21, 2025, the Düsseldorf sports plant successfully returned from the first Grand Prix series of the European Taekwondo Union (ETU) from Tallinn, Estonia. From April 9th to 11th, four athletes from the association, including the 15-year-old Liliana Balla, took part in the history by winning the first medal for the Düsseldorf sports plant at a Grand Prix. Your success in this important event underlines the potential of the association in the international Taekwondo.
liliana Balla competed in the weight class up to 44 kg and showed impressive performance. In the round of 16, she prevailed against an opponent from Greece, dominated the match and also showed in the quarter -finals against a Swedish opponent that she was one of the best. In addition to Balla, Aslan Cavusman also reached the quarter -finals in -68 kg competition, where he lost to a Greek opponent and thus took 5th place. Kaan Ilkayli and Emilia Brilz had to give up in their fights against strong opponents from the Czech Republic and Greece. Despite these defeats, all athletes from the Düsseldorf sports work showed strong performances, which indicates a promising future of the association.
The Grand Prix in Tallinn was an important event for the Düsseldorf sports plant, which has established itself in the German Taekwondo in recent years. This is particularly noteworthy because the German Taekwondo Union (DTU), since its foundation in 1981, has continuously gained popularity and is now the only Taekwondo Association in Germany recognized by the German Olympic Sports Association.
The German Taekwondo scene
Taekwondo is enjoying growing popularity in Germany and Europe. The sport, which is considered one of the most common martial arts worldwide, attracts many young talents. In the past, two Taekwondo World Championships have already taken place in Germany, the first in 1979 in Sindelfingen and the second in 2003 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The DTU represents around 60,000 athletes and goes into training with modern approaches. This includes the use of technologies such as the athlete analyzer for performance optimization. In 2021, the DTU recorded around 60,551 members, which underlines the constant growth and interest in Taekwondo. The European Taekwondo equipment market is also growing by 5.2%annually.
Overall, the return of the Düsseldorf sports plant from the Grand Prix series not only shows the individual success of Liliana Balla, but also the remarkable developments that the entire German Taekwondo scene goes through. Such achievements are a sign of the future and hope for further success.
