Urban development funding: Menden celebrates the day of living places!
On May 1, 2025, the upcoming nationwide day of urban development funding will be prepared in Germany on May 10, 2025. Paul Ziemiak, member of the Bundestag, emphasizes the relevance of urban development for the Märkische Kreis. Under the motto "Living places, strong communities", around 600 cities and municipalities present how the living environment can be improved and social cohesion can be strengthened.
The northern Märkische Kreis has benefited from over 50 million euros in federal funds in recent years. One example is the city of Balve, which last year received 116,000 euros from the urban development programs. Ziemiak emphasizes that these financial means are crucial to promote social cohesion and revitalize city centers. In addition, the promotion enables climate -friendly urban development.
activities on the action day
On the day of urban development, a family sports festival takes place in Menden, in which the opening of the Huckenohl Stadium is celebrated. Ziemiak recognizes the high level of local commitment and the significant role of citizen participation for the success of urban development projects.
The urban development funding, which has supported municipalities in coping with economic, social and ecological challenges since its introduction in 1971, has already funded over 12,400 measures in around 4,000 municipalities nationwide. In 2025, the federal government also provides 790 million euros for various programs, including "living centers", "social cohesion" and "growth and sustainable renewal".
program "social cohesion"
The program "Social City", which has been operating as a "social cohesion" since 2020, aims especially on positive developments in quarters with structural and social problems. It bundles public and private resources and enables further offers from the state, the federal government and the EU. The principle of cooperation in districts has been running through the programs since the 1990s.
A central component is integrated action concepts developed by municipalities. These concepts contain goals, strategies and financing plans that must be in line with the needs of the respective districts. Activation and participation of the residents, companies and non-profit organizations are of crucial importance to make sustainable progress.
With a variety of programs in the areas of integration and family centers as well as crime prevention, the networked support of urban problem areas is sought. The programs promote generation justice and strengthen the social structures, something that has been implemented in 965 measures in 544 cities since the beginning of the funding until 2019.
Urban development funding is therefore not only an instrument to improve the quality of life, but also a decisive factor for the identification of citizens with their quarters.
