Streaming revolution: Germany's television consumption is head!

This day, April 30, 2025, the media landscape in Germany is experiencing a considerable change, which is particularly shaped by the continuing boom in the streaming market. A remarkable step in this area is the introduction of the new magazine "Streaming" by the Funke media group . The magazine aims to structure the often confusing streaming market and to offer users valuable orientation.

"streaming" will appear quarterly and comprises 134 pages at a price of 3.90 euros. It offers innovative navigation tools, including a series, film and documentary planner and two megaplaners for a clear overview of a total of 152 series and over 1000 films from flat rate offers. The magazine will present highlights such as the new season of "The Crown", a making-of report on "Mandalorian" and the series finale of "Modern Family". In addition, a background report will shed light on the current boom of True Crime Docus. This makes it clear again how much the preferences of the spectators have changed.

streaming as a dominant medium

According to a current study by Nielsen , 77 percent of the German video streaming services claim that of 7 percentage points compared to the previous year. This shows that streaming services have now overtaken linear television in use. This development is particularly pronounced in the age group of 18- to 34-year-olds, in which 92 percent regularly fall back on streaming.

The most popular streaming platforms are still Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube. The weekly use is at a particularly high level, which is 56 percent at Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. These numbers prove the continuous increase and the growing interest in streaming content, while the visual participation of the public service broadcaster ARD and ZDF decreased, with 39 percent daily and 73 percent weekly use.

The role of streaming in everyday life

Another aspect is the falling number of households without streaming subscription. This number has dropped by 4 percent, and the latest statistics show that Netflix 2024 had an increase in new users by 18 percent, while Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ also increased with 16 and 11 percent. The switch to networked television (CTV) increases rapidly. 76 percent of the respondents are familiar with CTV, and 35 percent use it daily or at least three times a week.

Media use has fundamentally changed. 74 percent of the respondents express concern about fake news; 61 percent of CTV users access Smart TV, which further reinforces the trend, while social media are the least perceived.

In summary it becomes clear that the new magazine "Streaming" by Funke Mediengruppe not only offers an answer to the needs of the audience, but is also of great importance in the context of a constantly changing media landscape. The increasing popularity of streaming services reflects a clear trend towards on-demand content, which should continue to stop in the coming years.
