Severe weather risk in North Rhine -Westphalia: Thunderstorms and heavy rain threaten Easter!

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) experienced a temperature rise that resulted in a dramatic change in weather. The day started with bright sunshine, but from the afternoon, strong thunderstorms moved across the state and led to considerable weather -related warnings.

The thunderstorms, which pulled northwards from the Eifel and the Sauerland in the afternoon, brought heavy rain with rainfall between 15 and 25 liters per square meter per hour. In some regions, up to 40 liters per square meter and gusts of wind were forecast of up to 80 km/h. The temperatures were between 18 and 21 degrees that day, in the Eifel by 16 degrees.

For the night of Easter Monday, the thunderstorms were expected to weaken, but initially heavy rain of 15 to 30 liters per square meter in six hours.

for Tuesday, April 22, the DWD again predicted changeable weather with loosening, shower and thunderstorms and temperatures from 16 to 19 degrees. Individual thunderstorms with gusts of wind around 60 km/h could also occur on Tuesday afternoon.
