Violet day in Mönchengladbach: Record train inspires the city!

Today, on February 26, 2025, the Violet Day takes place in Mönchengladbach under the motto "Jubilee, hustle and bustle, cheerfulness". The big move begins at 1:11 p.m. on Lüpertzender Straße and is expected as one of the largest carnival trains in Germany. This can be found from information from EXTRA TIP on Sunday.

The new "Narrennest" car building hall in Giesenkirchen is used for the carnival for the first time. This weatherproof hall has encouraged many carnival clubs to become creative and build new festival cars. Zugleiter Thomas Platzer announced that this year's train comprises six festival cars more than in the previous year.

special security precautions

In view of the current security situation, the security concept was tightened at two special train points due to previous incidents with additional locks. Around 175 volunteers, supported by various organizations, ensure security during the move. There will also be a special blind report on the old market, which is realized in cooperation with the MKV and the support of Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The city center will be closed to vehicle traffic from 11.15 a.m., and residents were asked to remove their vehicles from the blocked area in good time. From 8 a.m., through traffic in the surrounding roads will also be restricted. For the time after the move, the central bus station is moved to Hindenburgstrasse between 11.15 and around 7 p.m.

increased interest and celebration

The increased interest in the Veilchendienagszug is not only attributed to the new cars and the moves in the modern hall, but also to the general desire to experience more together after difficult times. Gert Kartheuser, chairman of the carnival association, emphasizes that the train is significantly larger this year and comprises more than 500 participants.

In addition, this year the 50th anniversary of the merger of Mönchengladbach and Rheydt will also be emphasized as the central theme of the move. Nevertheless, the carnival association expressed concerns about the increasing costs for the organization, especially in terms of grandstands and mobile toilets. On the other hand, the support of local companies that provide vehicles and employees for the locks is positive.

One of the other innovations is that the WDR local time reports for the first time this year from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cameras will be placed in the urban area both compared to the Minto and with mobile units in order to capture the preparations and the move. Two radio stations, Radio 90.1 and WDR4, are also on site to accompany the celebrations and to capture the atmosphere.
