Transport in Landau: Greens demand real solutions for citizens!

In the current political debate about the turnaround in Landau, the Greens have practiced sharp criticism of the SPD. In a statement, the parliamentary group leader Lea Saßnowski and her colleague Lea Heidbreder rejected the allegation that her assessment is based exclusively on the Modal Split data of 2023. Instead, they emphasize that the reason for the application was pointed out to uncertainties in the interpretation of this data. Her application, which provided for a hearing from scientists, was rejected by the SPD in the city council, although the Greens would be happy to have the results assessed by experts. They hardly remember suggestions to strengthen the wheel, foot or bus traffic on the part of the other factions, including the SPD, CDU and FWG.

The Greens vehemently criticize the traffic turnaround to reduce the purely quantitative promotion of bicycle traffic. In this context, the so -called "cannibalization effect" is also addressed, in which improvements in the environmental association can lead to shifts within the transport system. The Greens report an increase in the Modal Split by eight percentage points, although the opposite claims were also made in the discussion.

successes and challenges of the traffic transition

dr. Lea Heidbreder emphasizes the positive effects of transport policy among a green traffic department. These include the expansion of the bus system, traffic calming measures in the city center and an improved cycling infrastructure. According to an investigation by the Technical University of Dresden, the share of the environmental association has increased from 70 % to 74 % in the past five years, whereby the proportion of motorized private transport is reduced.

A significant success is the shift in traffic from the car to the environmental association, which has risen from 21 % to 29 %. The satisfaction of the population with the traffic situation in Landau is also high. The latest surveys also show that 70 % of the respondents rate the pedestrian situation as good or very good. The foot traffic shares have increased significantly: in domestic traffic by +7 percentage points and a total of +6 percentage points.

decline in car traffic

The decline in the auto quota, which has dropped from 1.4 to 1.2 cars per household, shows the successful development of the traffic transition. This goes hand in hand with an increase in households without a car, especially among seniors. From 1/7 of households without a car in 2018, the proportion rose to 1/3 in 2023. These positive trends not only contribute to improving air quality, but also have an impact on traffic safety and quality of life in the city.

Another important aspect is the change in usage behavior in public transport (public transport). While 50 % of public transport uses were used in 2018, leisure, services and ways of working have become equal factors today. The introduction of flexible transport offers, such as the Flexline at the end of 2022, and the Germany ticket in spring 2023 contributed to almost 20 % to increase the time card holder.

The Greens are now asking the SPD to seriously deal with the real problems of the traffic transition and not only to express their reviews of the implemented measures. In the discussion at the political level, it is crucial that all parties develop constructive and sustainable solutions for the challenges in the traffic sector.
