The exhibition illuminates the important Saxon wars, which took place under Charlemagne from 772 to 804. The aim of these military disputes was to submit the Saxons and their integration into the Franconian Empire. This lively story is presented by computer -animated figures that are dressed in detail and illustrate life and struggles of the time. The Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe designed the exhibition as part of the anniversary series "1250 Years of Westphalia".
Introduction to the Saxon Wars
In the 8th century, the Saxons lived between Eider and Harz and between the Rhine and the Elbe. They were subject to tribute, but were never subject to the subjects of the Merovingians. The Saxon tribal associations, including Westphalia and East Falen, regularly carried out raids in the Franconian area. These attacks led to military conflicts and ultimately to Charlemagne, who wanted to prevent the raids and to Christianize the Saxons. The first campaigns that started in 772 resulted in crucial battles, including the destruction of the Irminsul, which triggered a massive uprising of the Saxons. These historical aspects are clearly conveyed in the exhibition and supplemented by interactive elements, which are particularly appealing for those interested in history and families.
By using virtual reality, visitors can take part in the Battle of Brunsberg and experience how the characters at that time interact. In addition to VR experiences, the exhibition is also supplemented by original and replicated weapons, archaeological finds from East Westphalia and creative workshops. Children can make their own shields and glass pearl chains under the guidance of specialists, while calligraphy courses are offered for adults.
