Bird observations on the Lower Rhine: Discover domestic splendor!
On April 21, 2025, the NABU nature protection station in Lower Rhine invites you to exciting bird excursions in picturesque nature reserves. The first excursion will take place on May 4th at 6 a.m. in the Emmericher Ward. Under the direction of biologist Lena Wiest, the participants will experience the special atmosphere at the sunrise and concentrate on observing the black throat. For this excursion, spending and binoculars are on offer so that nature enthusiasts can experience the birds up close.
continues with a second excursion that takes place on May 10 in the Düffel nature reserve. Here the ornithologist Mona Grundmann will accompany the visitors. The focus is on the Kiebitz, a typical meadow bird, the striking reputation and threatened inventory are brought closer to the participants. As part of the event, the participants not only learn about the peculiarities of the lapwing, but can also hear the sounds of the shotguns and the big bird of fallow. The excursion begins at 10 a.m.
Special event for children
Another highlight this month is a special event for children that will take place on May 31 from 10 a.m. in cooperation with the Family Center Lebens source. Biologist Daniela Kupschus brings the small children and their accompanying persons closer to the domestic bird world. These events are part of a series that aims to bring nature closer to nature and enable them to discover animals and plants.
The NABU (Nature Conservation Association Germany) not only offers these specific excursions, but many groups organize bird voice hikes all year round. These tours give participants the opportunity to learn more about the characteristics and chants of differentiated bird species from experienced bird customers. It should be noted that many of these excursions take place in the spring months, often shortly before sunrise when the birds are most active. Information on other events is available in a nationwide term database, whereby contact with local NABU groups is also recommended in order to receive access to further excursions.
commitment to bird protection
In addition to the excursions, NABU is working actively on topics related to bird protection as part of the Federal Specialist Committee for Ornithology (BFA). The BFA develops positions and is an important guide for members, citizens and the media. In the past 40 years, Europe has lost terrifyingly over 30 million birds, which illustrates the urgency of nature conservation. In cooperation with various ornithological societies, the organization is committed to comprehensive analyzes of bird stocks and suitable protective measures.
Practical tips, such as building nesting boxes and bird protection hedges, are part of the efforts to stabilize the bird populations in the long term. The BFA comprises seven federal working groups that are devoted to various aspects of bird protection, including the protection of birds of prey and owls as well as the risk from power lines. Their work is of fundamental importance for the protection of biodiversity in Germany and is, among other things, through the commitment of prominent speakers such as Heinz Kowalski and Dr. Hans-Valentin Bastian supports.
