Future Trier: New concepts for living and urban development!

On February 7, 2025, the city of Trier published a new publication entitled "Stadt im Blick". The responsible institution is the Office for urban development, statistics and elections , which has examined the current trends of urban development and their effects on Trier in close cooperation with network partners. This first edition deals intensively with the living Situation of older people aged 65 and over in Germany and Trier.

Different relevant aspects are illuminated within the publication. Central topics are the differences in the range of housing, the challenges due to rising rental costs and the varying apartment sizes. Furthermore, a look at future developments for municipalities will be taken, with strategies of other cities being considered as possible solutions. One main goal of this publication is the development of a future -oriented living space policy that is geared towards the needs of older people and at the same time promotes socially balanced urban development.

parallel to the current topics in the publication, the city is also working on a strategic development and target concept with the title "Future Trier 2025+". This concept, which is created under the leadership of the Office for Urban Development and Statistics , the aim of planning the development of the city forward-looking. Demographic change and the financial situation are particularly important.

In this context, three large fields of action were identified in this context: business and work, education and culture as well as living and living environment. Concrete strategic directional goals are to be formulated within these fields. A long -term goal is to realize the vision of a city with 110,000 inhabitants. In view of the changes in the population structure and the financial situation, an update of the existing concept is necessary, which was originally launched in 1992 under the title "Future Trier 2020".

The challenges of urban development

The demographic change, which has been leading the population in many German cities since 2010, makes significant adjustments in urban planning necessary. reports show that more people live today, especially ten years ago. This growth is not only influenced by immigration from home and abroad, but also brings significant changes in the demographic structure of the city population. The need for flexible and variable concepts in urban planning is more urgent than ever.

A special focus must be on the interests of the older population part to create a sustainable and socially balanced living environment. The city of Trier shows with the publication "City in the Blick" and the future concept 2025+ approaches to actively address these challenges and to work for a positive development of the city.
