Zweibrücken designs Alexanderplatz: citizens bring ideas!

On October 18, 2024, a citizen participation for the design of Alexanderplatz in Zweibrücken took place, which despite continuing rain attracted a large number of interested citizens. Over 50 people came together that day to bring in their ideas for upgrading the centrally located place. Alexanderplatz not only acts as a meeting point for weekly markets and various festivals, but is also an important place of arrival for pupils and visitors to the surrounding communities. The event had the goal of informing the citizens about planned design measures and capturing their suggestions and concerns in order to improve the place as a place of residence.

The submitted proposals were presented to the city council on January 22, 2025. In the case of citizen participation, the participants had the opportunity to view perspectives on four large -format transparent. By providing a comprehensive questionnaire - both digitally and in paper form - the residents were able to articulate their ideas on central topics such as greening, climate adaptation, gastronomy and security.

preferences of the citizens

One of the most common demands was the increase in greening and shading, supplemented by the desire for additional seating and improved bicycle friendliness. The topic of environmentally friendly mobility also received special attention. At the event, which took place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., employees of the city administration and planning offices were ready to give explanations on the planned measures.

A total of around 240 citizens took part in the questionnaire campaign, whose suggestions were included in the favorite variant of the planning draft. In addition to redesigning the square, further offers from cultural networks and events should be considered. However, the focus is not on a complete redesign, but on moderate additions that further upgrade the location.

meaning of citizen participation

Citizen participation plays an important role in urban decision -making processes because it increases the social acceptance of projects and gives people a voice. To involve locals brings numerous advantages that range from a democratic legitimation to improving decisions through local perspectives. This form of participation helps to strengthen a sense of community and reduce resistance to urban projects. Examples from other cities, such as 'My neighborhood, my place' in Berlin, show the effectiveness of such initiatives.
