Gaisberg tunnel in Heidelberg: full closure from Monday to the end of April!

From Monday, March 31, 2025, the Gaisberg tunnel in Heidelberg will be completely closed to traffic. This measure is part of an extensive renovation of the shotgail concrete shell, which should last until April 26, 2025. The full closure is necessary to increase the security standards of the tunnel and to regulate the traffic between the old town and the western urban area.

As part of this construction work, various bus lines of Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV) are affected. Lines 20, 31 and 36 and the M5 are diverted, which leads to changes in the stops. For line 20, the Gaisbergstrasse stops, Friedrich-Ebert-Platz, Peterskirche, Oberer Fauler Pelz, Rathaus/Bergbahn and S-BF old town are eliminated. Replacement stops include Bismarckplatz, St. Vincentius Hospital, Stadthalle, Marstallstraße and Alte Brücke. For the mountain railway, the accessibility via Herrenmühle to the Rathaus/Bergbahn stop remains.

Bus reductions and stops of stops

In addition, line 31, which is also affected by the blocking, is diverted in the direction of S-BF old town. The Friedrich-Ebert-Platz and Peterskirche stops are eliminated here. Instead, passengers can get out to St. Vincentius Hospital, Stadthalle, Marstallstrasse, Alte Brücke and Neckarmünzplatz. Line 36 is diverted in the direction of Ziegelhausen Köpfel between Bismarckplatz and Neckarmünzplatz, although several stops are not operated here either. These diversions will come into force from March 31st.

The city of Heidelberg has also announced that there are no restrictions on cycling and foot traffic during the construction work. The fire brigade and emergency services have also adapted their travel routes accordingly in order to be able to react quickly in the event of an emergency. In addition, households in the Friedrich Ebert facility receive 35 to 46 collection points for waste containers, the transport of which is taken into the collection points and back from the executing company.

additional maintenance work in Schlossberg tunnel

The maintenance work makes it necessary that the Schlossberg tunnel, which is also an important traffic artery for the city, is also closed at night between April 7 and 9, 2025. This tunnel remains accessible during the day, but regular maintenance work takes place at night times between 8:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. This work is planned twice a year in order to maintain the infrastructure continuously.

In the greater context of these measures, it says that the city of Heidelberg has made immense investments in the infrastructure in recent years. In the 2021/22 double budget, a total of almost 40 million euros were planned for various projects. Traffic problems are among the most common concerns of the citizens, as can be seen from the Heidelberg study 2021. Therefore, construction work is laid in holiday periods if possible. More than 38 million euros are currently planned for civil engineering and infrastructure measures, which also includes the renovation of the Gaisberg tunnel.

For more information about the construction work and the diversions, the city of Heidelberg will keep the population up to date on both the official websites and on social media. In addition, the RNV offers information about the changes to stops and via the RNV start.info app.
