D-Mark remains: Over 163 million notes in circulation!

Over 20 years after the introduction of the euro bar money, the D-Mark remains up to date for numerous people in Germany. In 2024, almost 3.7 million D-Marks were exchanged in euros in Hesse. This number is slightly below the previous year's value of 4.3 million D-Mark. The exchanged amount corresponded to around 1.9 million euros. Throughout Germany, almost 163 million D-mark notes and over 23 billion D-mark coins are in circulation, which corresponds to a total value of almost 12.2 billion D-Mark or about 6.24 billion euros.

Part of these stocks could be irretrievably lost, for example by destroyed banknotes or coins sent abroad. Reasons for the late exchange of the D-Mark are diverse: Fund matters are often discovered in household resolutions or renovations, and some people retain collectors as memorabilia. There is also a later desire to integrate old currencies into the current currency system. In Germany there is also an unlimited possibility of exchange at the Deutsche Bundesbank, which in contrast to many other euro countries guarantees permanent convertibility.

exchange conditions

The exchange of D-Mark banknotes and coins is free of charge and is not subject to any time or contract.
