Murder process around Hannah S.: Disappointment after the revision withdraws!

On February 25, 2025, the Dortmund public prosecutor's office decided to withdraw the revision against the judgment in Murder Hannah S.. This means the final end of the procedure, which took over three and a half years. The withdrawal was confirmed by prosecutor Henner Kruse and is due to several factors, including the deterioration ban and the long duration of the procedure.

The decision refers to the judgment of May 2024, in which the perpetrator, a 31-year-old, was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison for manslaughter. The public prosecutor is still convinced that the crime should be classified as a murder and not as a homicide. In the specific case, the perpetrator stabbed the 25-year-old Hannah S. on September 19, 2021 in Hamm.

disappointment of relatives

The relatives of Hannah S. expressed their disappointment with the withdrawal of the revision. They had hoped for a re -evaluation of the crime because they regarded them as a sex murder. The inability of relatives to submit a revision themselves led to a special emotional burden. The public prosecutor alone was responsible for this step, but the revision did not even arrive at the Federal Court of Justice, but got stuck with the Attorney General.

The perpetrator's therapy also played a role in the judgment, since he suffered from a serious personality disorder and had previously been convicted of sexual offenses. The court decided that it could not be sufficiently demonstrated that the crime was committed to satisfy the sexual instinct, which was decisive for the classification as a manslaughter. Therefore, the perpetrator was sentenced to the temporary accommodation in a forensic psychiatry.

mental illnesses and their perception

The discussion about the perpetrator also raises questions about the perception of mental illnesses in society. To do this, it should be noted that about every sixth experiences mental illness in the course of their lives. Research shows that genetic, biological and cultural factors play a role. It is important to distinguish between the actual dangers of mentally ill perpetrators and the frequency of mental illnesses.

The increase in mental illnesses could be due to an actual increase as well as improved diagnostic methods. Nevertheless, it is important to know that most people with affective disorders endanger themselves, which is expressed in high suicide rates. Amo runs are usually rare and not representative of most people.
