On May 31, 2025, the AfD in the southwest took a decisive step towards the state elections on March 8. At its meeting in Heilbronn, almost 400 delegates voted for the party's state list, without any internal fighting and with only a few questions, which is quite unusual for the AfD. Emil Sätze was elected to first place on the list with 276 yes votes and is ready to steer the party's fortunes. But the real excitement is Markus Frohnmaier, who was almost unanimously nominated as the top candidate - with only one vote against. Surprisingly, however, Frohnmaier has already made it clear that he does not want to run for the state parliament. This raises the question of how the party will deal with this dual leadership after striving for unity in recent months.

What is interesting is the difference between the old and new federal states. In the new federal states, which also includes Berlin, approval is at an impressive 28.1 percent, while in the old federal states it is only 16.5 percent. The AfD achieved the highest values in Saxony with 36 percent and Thuringia with 35 percent, while Hamburg had the lowest value with 7.5 percent. This could play a crucial role for the AfD's election campaign and strategy.
A new dynamic in the party
However, the question remains whether the new cohesion will last. Many critics, including Dirk Spaniel, have left the party or are withdrawing - an indication that not everyone is happy with the current direction. Nevertheless, the AfD is showing clear progress in its organization, as party conferences are now only held with delegates, which apparently makes decision-making processes more efficient.
In summary, it can be said that the AfD is in an exciting phase: they are going into the election campaign confidently with new faces and surprising decisions. It still remains to be seen whether this feeling of unity and the rising poll numbers can be translated into votes for the state elections. The next few months will show whether the party can actually regain the trust of voters.
