Markus Frohnmaier: Rise of the AfD star in the shadow of Höcke

Markus Frohnmaier, at the age of 34, already a influential player in Germany's political landscape, has established himself as an influential representative of the right wing of the AfD established. Born on February 25, 1991 in Craiova, Romania, he came to live in Germany through an adoptive family, where he grew up in the Böblingen district and later began studying law at the University of Tübingen, which he had to abandon.

Frohnmaier has not only been a member of the Bundestag for the AfD since 2017, but also co-founder of the now-defunct youth organization Junge Alternative. His commitment to right-wing extremist positions can be traced back to the “Erfurt Resolution”, to which he was one of the first signatories. In his role as foreign policy spokesman and deputy chairman of the AfD parliamentary group, he has always advocated for the association to become more professional, which has earned him a lot of support within the party. At the nomination in Heilbronn he received impressive support from around 390 delegates, with only one opposing vote.

Controversies and rise

Although Frohnmaier was able to pacify the AfD in Baden-Württemberg, he is under critical observation due to his connections to Russian politicians and ideological proximity to right-wing extremist structures. He employs people with connections to the right-wing extremist scene in his parliamentary office and calls, among other things, for the Federal Constitutional Court to be replaced by judges loyal to the party. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has now established that Frohnmaier's positions are questioning society's monopoly on violence.

In addition, Frohnmaier, who is married to the Russian journalist Daria Frohnmaier and has two children, has come under fire for his public statements on migration policy. In one of his controversial speeches, he described “integration refusers” and “violent offenders” as central problems. His calls to enforce a general ban on Muslims entering the EU are just a few examples of the provocative rhetoric that he actively spreads on social media.

Right-wing extremism and political structures

Frohnmaier's activities are part of a larger trend that underscores the challenges of right-wing extremism in Germany. The Right-wing extremism is a constant problem for democracy, and actors like Frohnmaier use social upheavals to propagate their ideologies. There are various structures that enable right-wing extremist actors to spread their messages, be it through informal citizen alliances or established political parties such as the AfD, which are seen as an anchor of stability for right-wing extremist attitudes.

With critical eyes on his restless career, it remains to be seen what will happen next for Frohnmaier. Whether as a “prime ministerial candidate” for the state elections in 2026 or in another role – his influence on the political landscape in Germany will certainly continue to cause discussions.
